The Photo Archives of Life Magazine

"Search millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today. Most were never published and are now available for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google."

These are, of course, copyrighted, but Time said the photos are available for free for personal and research purposes. So, they would be OK to use in an educational multimedia project if you follow the fair use guidelines and credit the source.

This will be the classroom competition for those who wish to participate. Students who plan to go to the SkillsUSA competition in Alfred (Chelley, Andy Z, Megan and Rob) MUST participate. This can also count as either your 2Q Proj2, your 3Q Proj1 or your NCCC break project, depending on your individual schedule. In order to count towards the classroom competition, it cannot be handed in any later than the 3Q Proj1 deadline, which is February 5. The actual contest deadline is April 22, for others who may wish to participate later, or revise their entry.

Another mini project grade opportunity for Skills members

Check out the bulletin board for the guidelines for the Skills USA national pin design contest. This could count as a tutorial grade for Skills members. There are also Regional and State pin design contests for skills, but I do not have the specs for those yet. I'll keep you posted.

Mini-Project/Tutorial Grade Opportunity

The Early Childhood Ed class is looking for someone to design a single-color or 2-color t-shirt design for the preschool program. The name of the preschool is Niagara Preschool Learning Center and they are thinking of have a saying like Playing and Learning...It's What We Do or Learning Through Play. They would also be open to anything else that you might come up with.

This would count as one tutorial grade for this quarter. They would like something soon, though, so let me know ASAP if you are interested.

Villa Maria visit night and class visit days

Villa Maria College is holding a Fall visit night next Wednesday, October 22 from 5-7 pm, in case anyone is interested in checking out their school. They do have a new animation program which may be of interest to some of you. Flash/3D/Motion Graphics. Looks like it could be cool.

Also, class visit days are scheduled for Nov. 17 - 20. You can sit in on classes / studios, meet current students and faculty, etc. I would exempt you from BOCES that day if you wish to visit, as long as you make arrangements with me ahead of time.

The Eyeballing Game

Here's a cool game to check and see how accurate you really are when you try to "eyeball" things. My best score so far is a 2.69. Beat it. :-) Another great find courtesy of Ze Frank.

Another good site for photos for projects

This site http://www.geograph.org.uk contains over 1 million photos taken of the British Isles. You might think it would be just landscapes, but I did a few searches for various items and turned up some good images. When you have found an image you like, click on the "Interested in reusing this image?" link under the image. This will give you access to a high res version to download, as well as instructions on how to credit the image, if required.

Make sure to check out the video podcast if you are at all interested in getting into 3D animation - it will give you a realistic idea of what it takes to produce a 3D short. http://pigeonimpossible.com/MainPage.php

Blog Grades 9/19/08

Grades have been emailed. Many people are not completing all the requirements. Like the notebook last year, this is a really easy grade to earn, as long as you keep up with it and meet the specifications. Also like the notebook, if you do not do it, your grade will suffer. Get in the habit of reading the class blogs (especially mine) EVERY day. If you do not understand what you are supposed to be posting, re-read your assignment sheet, or my first blog post, or ask me.

Special Post Assignment: What is a blog?

For your next blog grade, you need to complete the normal Weekly Comments post requirement, at least one posts of interest (instead of the usual two), plus the following post requirement:

Define the term "blog" in your own words, and find a blog that you think is cool. Include in your post why you chose that blog, why it's useful, entertaining, whatever. Make sure to include an active link to the URL in your post.

Here's one of my favorite blogs: http://www.boingboing.net/

I like it because you never quite know what you're going to find, but it's usually something worthwhile.

p.s. Blog grades for last week have been sent to your gmail accounts.

Elephant Cam

From Neatorama:

Film-maker John Downer had a brilliant idea. He attached cameras to elephants and let them loose in an animal reserve to capture wildlife photos as you’ve never seen before:

He fixed webcams to four elephants. One carried a "trunk-cam" - a device resembling a huge log concealing a camera which could be held in its trunk and dangled close to the ground.

Another had a "tusk-cam" hooked over its tusk. The elephants moved so steadily that the images are pin-sharp. Other log-cams were left on the forest floor. […]

NIN offers free music

Nine Inch Nails goes Creative Commons remix-friendly with new album

Nine Inch Nails have released the first nine tracks of their new album, Ghosts I-IV, as a free download under a remix-friendly Creative Commons license. The band is selling a selection of collectible, high-margin media with the music on it, and will presumably tour and sell tickets to people who got turned on by the freely copyable music.

rate the PSAs. NOW!

Hey All-

Jason's and Waylon's PSA entries are now live on schooltube.com. There are some prizes awarded on the highest rated videos, so go show them some love!

Go to http://rtndf.schooltube.com/rtndf.aspx and rate their entries. Probably the easiest way to find them is to follow my link and look under the "Newest" category. Their entries are entitled "The Freedom to Be Me" and "The Ice Cream Amendment". Alternately, you could search for the titles. The contest entry period ends this Monday, Feb 4, so get busy!
