Firebrand TV

Here's a site where you can search for and watch commercials "without all that annoying television content in between them", as Ze Frank says.

Leopard has arrived

So....

I just got back from the Apple store, where OSX Leopard was released tonight. Waited in line for an hour to get a free T-shirt. It's black with an X on it. Yes, I am a giant geek. sigh.

I pre-ordered a copy for the class to try out on one computer for now. Should be arriving soon...

Improv Everywhere

This is a group that organizes what could be called social experiments, then videotapes the often hilarious results. The Slo Mo Home Depot is one of my favorites.

Google Image Labeler

This is kind of an addictive game-type activity Google has come up with to help create image tags for their search results. You are paired with an anonymous partner for 2 minutes. You both look at the same images, one at a time and try to come up with labels for each one. You get points if you and your partner's labels match. Interesting way for Google to get people to help create image tags...

wall animation

This is a pretty amazing animation, also an example of what a change project could look like, if you painted a little each day. (It plays twice.)

The Insomnia Film Festival

Here's your chance to win a new MacBook Pro and video software. You can borrow school video equipment, but you'd have to have some kind of editing software at home to edit, as it's on a weekend. (iMovie counts!) You can work in teams. (Everyone over to Tricia and Miquela's for all night move making! haha.)

Another Famous Podcast: Ask a Ninja

http://askaninja.com

The premise of this show, hosted by a ninja, is that viewers write in and ask the ninja questions, which he answers in a somewhat Will Ferrell-esque, usually entertaining way. This is another example of a low budget podcast that became very famous very quickly. It's all about the character, and having an idea that can be maintained over time.

It's the kind of show that some people find hilarious, others stupid. I was torn down the middle, depending on the episode, but hilarity usually won. Some of the episodes are a bit long, I think, and could be tightened up a bit.

Check out some of the older ones first, to get a feeling for the show. My favorite right now is Question 2: "Ninja Santa".

300

So, I finally watched 300 this weekend. I'm kind of ambivalent about it. I liked the style, in general, although it was a bit Matrix-like and got tiresome after awhile. Great decapitation shot with the giant - nice attention to detail with the skin ripping. haha. I actually almost like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DM8yUwrpgLI (thanks, Derrick) better than the movie itself. All in all, I preferred Sin City...

ze frank

This is a video blog every digital media student should be aware of. Ze Frank became very well known for "The Show", which he did every week day for a whole year. Not just a passive experience, Ze turned his show into an interactive community with contests, audience participation, even an ongoing chess match between Ze and the "sports racers", as his audience become known as. A true original, Ze's show is better experienced than described. I recommend starting at the beginning, and watching a day at a time, but that's my Type A personality coming through.... ;-P
